49. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.”

Can a movie that was released in 1971 be considered a classic? I can answer that: yes.  Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory the original and musical takes on the classic novel. It is a classic in so many ways.  You must first start with Willy Wonka himself Gene Wilder.  Wilder is absolutely brilliant and a bit creepy as the chocolate genius. I still can’t believe he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar with this role!
Creepy
The songs are a nice touch too. I am not a big fan of musicals but these songs are entertaining and fun. With the exception of the Cheer Up Charlie song which just almost puts me to sleep everytime I watch it. They did an amazing job casting the children in the movie. The amazing fact is that Peter Ostrum who played Charlie never made another movie! In fact this is the only movie he ever made! Awesome classic movie.

Final Worth: You got to own this classic!

  4. I loved this movie! Gene Wilder does an outstanding job as Willy Wonka. He is no Johnny Depp ,and the story is a lot tamer that the book or sequel. BUT...I love the Oompa loompas and the songs they sang for each child's demise and expulsion. I remember seeing it after my fourth grade teacher read us the book...and at the time I liked the movie better. My favorite scene is with Varuka Salt and Mr. Wonka's last words about her..."She was one bad nut!". worth seeing, especially if you like the newer remake. Worth owning...keep it forever!
