80. The King's Speech (PG-13 version)

King George has a problem.  He can’t sp-sp-sp-speak well and he st-stu-stu-stutters.  So he enlists the help of a therapist who is more than a little unorthodox but is supposed to have the rep for doing wonders with this problem.
Set on the back drop of infant stage of Radio, The King’s Speech is a wonderfully acted, but sometimes boring Oscar winner for Best Picture. I do think Colin Firth is phenomenal in this movie from an acting stand point. But to tell me that this movie is better than Inception or The Social Network then you have more problems than old King George here.
King George doesn’t even want to be king. He is forced into the throne and is petrified of having to lead his people who now rely on the sound of his voice. The movie is good. It drags in parts.  But you do start to care and really connect with George as he goes on this journey to cure his problem. Then finally at the end when he delivers a grand and epic speech you do find yourself wanting to stand and applaud. But better than Inception and Social Network.  No way.

Final Verdict: Not worth owning. Not the best picture.  But IT IS worth watching.

Other tidbits:
Speech therapist Lionel Logue is played by Geoffrey Rush aka Captain Barbosa from Pirates of the Caribbean.
A couple of other notable characters from the HP series make appearances as well.

  1. Do you think it is worth renting to watch? I have been wanting to see it but want to make sure it is worth the money to rent.

I like your narrative. Very informative.

  4. Man, I thought this was way better than inception and the social network. I know you think inception was totally original and unique and stuff, but I wasn't that drawn in by it. The whole idea seemed kind of hokey, even from a science fiction standpoint. And the ending was annoying. The social network suffered ONLY because of it's subject matter. I mean, it's a great story, fantastically directed and acted, a legendary soundtrack, but, which story is going to mean more to people? the story of a duke who used to play second fiddle rising to the occaision, through adversity, overcoming lifelong personal problems and stepping up to get the job done? or the story of a lawsuit between two former friends over a lucrative website? I know which one I'd choose. Facebook is going to be obsolete one of these days anyway. I respectfully disagree with your verdict, and I know this movie deserved best picture. It has so much to say to all of us in each of the contexts where we struggle in our lives, and how we would and should relate to our fellow human beings. It forces us to examine ourselves, and teaches us something. That's what really makes a good movie. Inception was average at best, and the social network was great and I liked it a lot, but the king's speech was a lot better, and it deserved everything It got.

Winter's bone was better than all 3 movies though. It didn't get nearly the credit it deserved.

  5. I thought King's Speech was amazing! I liked it better than Social Interwork for sure and probably better than Inception. Of course it helps that Colin Firth is one of my all time favorite actors. Plus I really like movies that are based on true stories. It literally makes history come to life.

  6. I LOVE Colin Firth...I don't think there's been a movie he's been in that I haven't seen and haven't loved! I think this movie had a well thought out cast. The movie went along so well I didn't realize that it was as long as it was.
