Quick Note: In case you don’t know, the Veggie Tales series is produced by Big Idea Productions for the purpose of using short and funny (usually 30 minutes) shows to tell kids stories from the Bible in a way that they will understand and remember. As the title suggests, the characters were originally all vegetables but over the years they have also branched out to include some fruits. Jonah was the first and only full length Veggie Tale movie. I know it’s got to be tough to take a 30 minute show and stretch it into a movie. Watching Jonah was a struggle. With that said. It’s a solid effort. I have been in many group showings of this movie with children and it works. Why exactly do I own the 2 disc special edition of it? I don’t really know.
Jonah takes a fresh twist on the classic Bible tale. Like with all veggie tales it’s very musical and filled with many off the wall moments. The best parts that I enjoyed were the expanded role of the crazy pirates that don’t do anything. That has always been my favorite of the silly songs; so it was good to see them in so much of this. These have are obsessed with the good things of life like root beer and snack foods! The BEST part of the movie was definitely the Ninevites! The sheer fact that they are all fish slappers was great! So funny. Very entertaining!
But overall it’s tough to sit through an hour and twenty minute veggie tale episode. There were times that it was boring. I think that maybe children may get bored during certain points of the down time. But they get the story and moral lesson across. Ninevites change and Jonah whines. But is it worth owning?
Final Verdict: Not worth owning for me. But for your family--Maybe
I really like VeggieTales but I only remember Jonah being okay. What a shame.

ReplyDeleteSadly I haven't seen all of it but remember watching a little at the Melba. But I love Veggie Tales!!!! Used to watch silly songs with my lil sis. Great memories!!!

ReplyDeleteThe preview for The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything (which was another full length Box office release, btw), says its (begin movie announcer voice) "from the makers of Jonah, the most successful vegetable movie of all time." Why yes, as far as vegetable movies, probably safe to say :)

ReplyDeleteI love this movie. Jonah is a great veggie tales movie that has the same biblical story format as the 30 minute shorts. (not to be confused with the 3pak for $1.50 shorts from Fruit of the Loom) It kept me entertained for the entire movie. I also love the Ninevites as fish slappers...HILARIOUS! This movie has something for everybody, children of all ages as well as us older folk. the only thing I can find fault with this flick, is that they had so much material to deal with and fit into a 90 minute film, they crammed so much into this...they had a couple of scenes that dragged on a bit to long. But, overall, this is a great movie! Think I'll kick the kids off netflix and go watch it again!

ReplyDeleteI like eating vegetables while watching Veggietales and pretending that the cucumber i just cut up was larry and the tomato on my sandwhich is a piece of Bob the veggietales always seemed kinda lame to me i mean they dont give them arms so how do they pick up stuff i have thought that since i was little and when i used to go to day care they showed veggietales and i would always fall asleep from being so bored i remember seeing this in theatres and wishing i was at home the whole time i know that sounds harsh but i mean if it was Fruity Tales i might like it more because at least then the show would help me out a little because talking fruit is awesome look at the ANNOYING ORANGE! lol just my little tidbit
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my fave Veggie Tales cuz it's one of the first I ever saw. The fish-slapping is really funny to me. I like the peas who talk with french accents. I ALWAYS think the songs are really clever. AND it's just so WEIRD to have produce with invisible hands ACTING. I was disappointed with the most recent theatrical PIRATE movie...ambiguous....but a great B-52's cover (Rock Lobster). O! "I'm a bumblebee."
