2. Marley and Me

Yes, men do cry.
First, I have to start off with the fact that I love Owen Wilson. He is one of my favorite actors. To some he might be a one trick pony, but ever since Armageddon I have found him absolutely hilarious. So when I pulled out Marley and Me that was my first thought. I was happy. Ready to go.

The best thing about Marley and Me is that it is based on a true story. I love that. I think it bleeds into the movie throughout. You also need to realize that this was the first movie that Owen Wilson made after he attempted suicide. IF you don’t know the whole story, Google it. I really feel that everything that Owen went through in his personal life really comes to life in this role. It's perfect for him. He is not over the top funny and gets to show his “range” as an actor. I love him in this role.

*****SPOILER***** Yes, Marley dies. You can't get around it, and you can't change it. It's based on a true story. Man, I cried. I have cried every time I have seen this movie. Which I think is 4 times now. I will be the first to admit that I cried and cried and cried. Call me a wuss, whatever. I grew up with a dog. It brought back so many great memories of growing up. When he is sitting there at the end telling Marley how great he was for loving them day in and day out I start to tear up. I really lose it at the burial when the children are sharing their feelings. Every time. You don’t get that with Owen Wilson in Shanghai Noon do you!? Final Decision: Absolutely worth owning!
Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston

Favorite Line: “It’s like Of Mice and Men” – Owen Wilson’s character John when on the way to get Marley fixed.

Other tidbits
-Alan Arkin plays Owen's boss in the movie and is so funny!
-The movie used 22 different Marleys in the filming.

  1. First of all, it has Jennifer Aniston. Say what you want about her acting but I will watch anything she is in. I love her and nothing anyone says will make you change my mind. Not even her restraining order against me has deterred me. Oh, Jennifer, your legal wranglings say "no no no" but your eyes say "yes yes yes"

As far as lovable dog movies go, this one is no "Old Yeller" or "Shiloh" but it is certainly several notches above the "Air Bud" franchise.

I enjoyed this movie immensely. I had read the book so I knew how it all played out. But that didn't stop me from crying at the end. I love the scene where John takes Marley to the beach and they have this wonderful bonding scene. It's all so heartwarming until Marley craps in the ocean. I love dogs. I love Jennifer Aniston. Gold mine.

  2. I love this movie, too. I almost started crying READING about someone else (you) watching it. For that reason, I don't really ever want to watch it again...but I think I might own it. Also, Jennifer Aniston always reminds me of my sister, therefore, I always love her in ANY role, except that one that was kinda creepy and way too sexual...I didn't give that one a full viewing after it showed its true colors.

  3. Marley and Me is a great movie in my book. It's just one that is hard to watch because it can be really depressing. It's hard to watch films that portray real-life heartbreaks like the miscarriage they experience and stuff like that. However, it's great for a laugh too like when Marley swallows the necklace and Owen Wilson has to be on poop patrol.

  4. I gotta say I haven't seen this one, and refuse to ever see it. I get angry at movies that I feel like intentionally try to make you cry. There, I said it, and I'm okay with that. Won't read the book. Won't see the movie. I hate ol' yeller too...and where the red fern grows...stupid animals!

  5. I don't think I've watched it all the way through, but I've seen bits and pieces. I think the only reason I watched it in the first place is because it had Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. I love both of them as actors, and what parts of the movie I have seen I really enjoyed, I've just never felt like sitting still long enough to watch another movie about a dog dying. I will watch the movie completely through one day - when I'm good and ready.

  6. Well, maybe it's just because i'm not a dog person, but I didn't like this movie much. I didn't like it because of what you said in your post. I do believe owen wilson is a one-trick pony. So is Jennifer Anniston. All the movies i've seen either one of them in have been the same kind of romantic comedies or dramas or an extra melodramatic blend of both. And I didn't really think it was realistic the way their happiness hinged on the welfare of an animal. I mean, I would be bummed if my cat decided not to come back from one of its many expeditions, but I wouldn't cry about it. I thought the scene at the end was bordering on offensive, with the liberal way it put the dog on the same level as the humans. That's just not how it is, and That's what I thought of the movie. I mean, if it's based on a true story, I'd expect to see a little more truth, or realism. So yeah, I'm glad you all liked it and i'm glad it had a profound effect on you, but it just wasn't for me.

  10. I love this movie, too. I watched it about a week after I had to put my dog of many years down. He was my best buddy. I did not know what the movie was going to be about, so it was hard to watch. Especially the scene where he is telling Marley goodbye. I am with ya, Jimmy, I cried and cried! Great movie, though.

  11. Great movie! I also really like Owen Wilson. I didn't know he attempted suicide. That's so sad. He's so funny and cool!
I'm glad they make movies based on true stories. They are all good and inspiring.
