43. Mamma Mia

Pierce Brosnan should not sing.  I was really tempted to make that the entire blog. Just wrap Mamma Mia up to that one point. I won't but I did want to stress that Pierce Brosnan should NOT sing.  Not his thing.
Mamma Mia that hit musical based on the music of ABBA.  The story about a young girl who is getting married and wants her father to walk her down the aisle. Except she doesn’t know who her father is. She has, however, narrowed it down to three men who could be the one. So she invites all three to her wedding unbeknownst to her mother, played by Meryl Streep.  What goes on from there is a lot of singing and a lot of soul searching. Oh, and it all takes place in Greece. I will say this, the beauty of Greece really comes out in the bluray edition of this.
Mamma Mia can be entertaining at times. It's funny in parts. But musicals are just not my thing.  It does help that ABBA music is not the traditional music that you hear in musicals. I do admire the creativity to take the ABBA classic pop songs and turn them into a story. I also admire the talent of Streep who can pull this role off just as well as she can anything else. But still Pierce Brosnan should not sing. Plus it really bugs me that they never tell you who the dad actually is.

Final Verdict: I would never own it, but doesn’t matter since my wife has deemed it worthy of owning. And in blu ray!

  1. AGREED. He just needs to stand still and look pretty. This movie was only so-so for me. I enjoyed the play MUCH more!

  2. Nothing wrong with a good musical! as long as the people can sing! Actors/Actresses should have to be auditioned to see if they can sing BEFORE they get the part. What ever happened to overdubbing ? #1), not a big ABBA fan, #2) chick flick!, #3)wasn't ABBA kinda disco?!?! add it all up...not worth owning...for me. If you like ABBA, if you like chick flicks, and if you were alive during the Disco era....you might wanna consider this movie! (this should leave out everyone under 30....)

  3. I really enjoyed this movie--obviously! I saw it in theaters with Kelley and we had such a great time. I also love all the music. But then again musicals are my "thing".

  4. I LOVE Amanda Seyfried But I didn't lik this movie. I really can't stand musicals. I hate it when people get that strange look in their eye and then they break into a song that is almost always stupid. lol Great review. awful movie. :o)

  5. I liked that this one was very up beat and made me want to sing along, which I could do because the words are at the bottom of the screen. I did find it very morally unethical. I mean 3 guys who can be the father? Yikes! What is this telling the young girls that are watching this? Sleeping around isn't only okay, but 3 guys in such a short time period is okay too...
