21. Mrs Doubtfire

When you think of Mrs. Doubtfire what comes to mind? You think of the funny movie starring Robin Williams. Still his most popular comedy yet not starring a Genie, right? But after my first viewing in many years (at least 5) the thing that stood out to me was how depressing this movie is. Within ten minutes the family gets divorced and the dad loses time with his children.  The movie is so misleading. Funny Funny Funny Funny then BAM! It hits you in the gut.
Don’t get me wrong. The movie is funny. Just the whole premise of Robin Williams dressing up as an English housekeeper is funny in its own right. The insanity that this involves is crazy and humorous. But underlining this is not really a family heart but an over the top depressing act. To me, watching it now, that out ways the funny parts. It makes the movie drag down.  My view of this movie is now tainted!!! I did watch it with one of my college students (Gears!) who really wanted to come over and take part in a random movie. He too was super excited to watch this movie since he hasn’t seen in it years either.  So I though I’d let him share his thoughts below.
  • Final Verdict for me: Worth owning but for different reasons now.  And…………..here’s Gears!
Mrs. Doubtfire is a spectacular movie I think it is so worth owning not only because it is one of Robin Williams Greatest films but because of the drama suspense and pure comedic genius of the movie I love it. It had been so long since I had seen it that I forgot Pierce Brosnan was in it as a guy named STU that is such a weird name. Seriously though the Ups and Downs of this movie tore me up there were times when I wanted to cry from the sadness of the movie and there were times when I wanted to cry because of the pure comedy that is Robin Williams especially when they played “Dude look like a lady” by Aerosmith that was great. Really that is all I have to say so if you are not doing something or actually even if you are Watch Mrs. Doubt fire it is fun and educational!

  2. I don't like cross dressing. I just don't, whether it's supposed to be funny or not. Robin Williams is so annoying. Sorry, but I don't like him or this movie. His stand up is the most vulgar, disgusting junk. So take that, put him in drag...ugh. Terrible.

  3. I love this movie. It is sad that it is all based around some pretty traumatic events, but I think that Robin Williams is hilarious!

  5. Funny Movie. I agree with Jimmy, it is a depressing film about a Dad that is just trying to get time with his kids, and the things he is willing to do to make that happen. Robin Williams is very funny, the scene in the first part of the movie where he is doing the voice over! Outstanding!! The gags in the film are top rate comedy. A must see if you like Robin William, and if you own it, watch it! it is worth it.

  6. "First day as a woman and I'm already having hot flashes."

Funny and sad. Heartbreaking almost. It's not Williams' best work or best film but it's certainly very enjoyable. My favorites of his:

    1. Good Morning, Vietnam
    2. The Dead Poets Society
    3. Moscow on the Hudson
    4. Insomnia
    5. One Hour Photo
    6. Insomnia
