133. The Day After Tomorrow

So I know its been awhile since I blogged. Has anyone even noticed? oh Well. I dont know if its been that its summer, the sun is out, its hot outside and I wish it was snowing instead but here are back on the blog.  With the snow on my mind I decided to bust out the best snow movie ever The Day After Tomorrow.  And if you know me at all, I LOVE DISASTER MOVIES!
TDAT is the one amazing movie. I love this film. Yes, I love snow, Yes I love disaster movies but this one is very very good. The storming centers around a father (Randy Quaid) a climitalogist and the end of the world ultimate snow storm. On top of the storm his son (Prince of Persia himself Jake Gyllenhaal) is trapped in a the public library of NYC. He sets out on a quest to rescue him.
Day After is from the same mind and groups have brought you Independence Day and 2012. It has a great mix of humor, action, disaster, and dramatic elements. Yes, disaster movies are not realistic. Movies are for an escape and I love movies that the grand spectacle of these movies. This is one is awesome and makes you crave a Wendy's Frosty ever time I watch it. Oh, and it looks AMAZING! on blu-ray.

Final Verdict: Worth Owning.

Does anyone read these?

94. The CORE

Yes The Core. The forgotten disaster movie.  The fact that I even own it is funny to me. This is how much I love disaster movies! I own the movie about the Earth’s core stopping and the whole world going into whackness.
The cast of this movie is so crazy good.  Think about it. Aaron Eckhart from The Dark Knight. Hilary Swank, who has won TWO OSCARS! Stanly Tucci, from The Devil Wears Prada and Delroy Lindo from Gone in 60 Seconds.  How can this movie go wrong!!!?! Oh yeah, it’s a movie about the Earth’s core stopping .
So the band of great actors in a mediocre movie join together in a ship and try to drill their way to the center of the Earth to save us all. OF course going to the center of the Earth is a dangerous thing. Not easy for anyone.  But it does serve to bring disaster on Earth and again that is why I love it.  It is the core of all movies. To be in a world that doesn’t exist.

Final Verdict: Its fun. Worth it.

59. Battle:Los Angeles

10 minutes into this movie. The movie about Aliens that attack Earth and the group of Marines that lead a charge to lead a group of civilians to safety and take back their city. So 10 minutes into this movie I turn and look at my wife and simply say…..”We are going to buy this.”

There are, I have found, certain movies that as soon as it starts you just start to feel something special, you get so engrossed right away that you know you will want to watch it again and again. For example this has happened to me in such movies as Twister, Dark Knight and The Blind Side. Battle:Los Angeles is awesome. So action packed. It is one of those movies that is non stop action. It stars Aaron Eckhart (two face in Dark Knight) as the leader of this group of marines. Eckhart is a man’s man. Don’t need nothing but a gun and a fight.
Our Hero.

But Battle:LA works when some Aliens are attacking might fail. Skyline for example was horrible. But in the same movie family as Armageddon and Independence Day Battle:LA makes you want to win. Makes you want the Marines to continue. Not to mention that filmmakers here do an outstanding job portraying the Marines as the courageous patriots that they are. While it is a “guy movie” Battle:LA is awesome and the best movie I have seen thus far in 2011. Can't wait for the sequel. Maybe it will be Battle:St. Louis!

Final Verdict: Can't wait to own it!

24. Poseidon

Ah Disaster movies… They are the endless tales of the struggles of ordinary humans up against extraordinary odds.  Whether it’s an asteroid heading to earth or an outbreak of twisters in Oklahoma, I am sucker for this genre of movies.
Poseidon is a remake of the classic Poseidon Adventure. This time instead of Gene Hackman in the starring role we get another basketball coach in the form of Josh Lucas (of Glory Road and Sweet Home Alabama fame) who plays Dylan. Dylan is an ex-navy officer who happens to be on the world’s largest cruise ship--The Poseidon. The passengers on the Poseidon have just celebrated the New Year when DISASTER hits in the form of a rogue wave. This rogue wave hits the ship and causes it to capsize but with people still alive on board. What will they do!??!?! How will they survive?!?!  WHAT IS FERGIE DOING IN THIS MOVIE!!??!!?
We quickly learn that Dylan is a loner and an expert on ships. He decides he is not staying in the grand ballroom where they have been promised that “everyone will be safe”. He decides that he is going to climb up the bottom of the ship to get out on top which is now the bottom but is really the top now. Before he goes he is joined by our main core group of survivors including Kurt Russell, his daughter Emmy Rossum (of other disaster movies such as Day After Tomorrow and Phantom of the Opera), her fiancĂ© and Richard Dreyfuss. They face many terrors on the path to the top. I won’t ruin the ending.
I know what I describe sounds ludicrous, but it is a great action movie. Poseidon was directed but Wolfgang Peterson who also did Air Force One and the Perfect Storm. It is worth watching.

Final Verdict: As a huge fan of this genre it would be a Disaster not to own it!
